Unreal Engine today unveiled a teaser trailer for The Matrix Awakens. An Unreal Engine 5 Experience, its own “boundary-pushing cinematic and real-time tech demo.” The teaser showed an existential Keanu Reeves staring into the camera and posing a difficult question: “How can we know what is real?” Many people have speculated whether the man in the clip is real or just a computer doppelganger.

“Get ready for a glimpse into the future of interactive narrative and entertainment with UE5,” says the promotional page for The Matrix Awakens on the Unreal website. While no specifics about the Unreal Matrix experience have been released, the website offers free pre-download links for both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions. There’s also a countdown until The Game Awards on Thursday, where the “experience will be disclosed.”

Keanu Reeves in Unreal’s Teaser For The Matrix Game

Because the brief glimpse of Keanu Reeves in Unreal Engine’s teaser was the only tangible piece of information, and because he looks so real while questioning the very nature of reality, a debate erupted on Twitter. People are questioning whether the Keanu Reeves shown in the trailer is the genuine article or just an impressive CGI rendering.

The question of whether Keanu Reeves is genuine or CGI, as well as if Unreal’s work with the creative team of The Matrix Resurrections will lead to a new full-fledged Matrix game, will have to wait until Unreal Engine 5’s debut at The Game Awards. I think we can all agree that any form of Keanu Reeves is amazing, whether he’s real or CGI.

What are your thoughts? Do you think the video is really Keanu or a CGI copy of him? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
